According to a report by Oyerepa FM on Thursday, 29th May, 2025, the Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Agyeman, also known as King Zuba, has given a strong warning to commercial drivers in the city. He says all drivers must join one of the 24 approved driver unions before they can work in the city.
According to the mayor, this new rule is meant to bring order to the transport system in Kumasi. During a meeting with the leaders of the driver unions, he made it clear that every driver must join a union right away. He stated, “Every driver should register with any of the 24 recognised unions today. If you are not part of a union, you are not allowed to work at any station that is not officially approved.”
He also said that drivers who join these unions will receive special ID cards to make it easy to identify them. This is to help the city authorities control the use of unauthorized areas, especially in the Central Business District, where some drivers operate from illegal stations.
In addition, the mayor spoke about a new plan to solve problems with short-distance transport fares. Many passengers have complained about drivers charging too much for short trips. To fix this, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has created a plan that will set fair prices for these short journeys.
He explained that this plan will be sent to the General Assembly for approval. Once it is approved, the police will help make sure the new rules are followed.
This new directive is part of the Kumasi Mayor’s efforts to organize commercial transport in the city, reduce chaos, and make the roads safer and more orderly for everyone.
