President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to establish two ultra-modern teaching hospitals in the Ahafo Region, marking a significant step in his administration’s commitment to enhancing healthcare infrastructure across Ghana.
This initiative is part of a broader vision to provide every region with a fully functional referral hospital, ensuring equitable access to quality medical services for all Ghanaians.
During his “Thank You” tour on May 31, 2025, President Mahama revealed that the Ahafo Region would receive its share of the promised regional hospitals. He emphasized that the new facilities would offer comprehensive services, including maternal and child healthcare, surgical procedures, diagnostics, and emergency care. The establishment of these hospitals aims to alleviate the pressure on existing major hospitals, such as the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, by providing specialized care closer to home for residents of the Ahafo Region.
President Mahama also highlighted the importance of collaboration with traditional authorities and regional stakeholders to facilitate the allocation of suitable land for the construction of these critical healthcare facilities. He called upon the chiefs and people of Ahafo to support the project, underscoring the collective effort required to bring this vision to fruition.
This development aligns with President Mahama’s broader healthcare agenda, which includes the establishment of a medical school within the former Brong Ahafo Region (comprising Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo) and the operationalization of the Sunyani Regional Hospital as one of the teaching sites. Additionally, plans are underway to upgrade the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge) into a full-fledged teaching hospital, affiliated with the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, to enhance specialist training and reduce referrals outside the region.
The establishment of these ultra-modern teaching hospitals in the Ahafo Region represents a significant investment in the nation’s healthcare system, aiming to provide high-quality medical services, promote medical education, and reduce the need for medical referrals abroad. As the plans progress, the collaboration between government, traditional authorities, and the community will be crucial in ensuring the successful implementation of this transformative healthcare initiative.
