The Vice President of Ghana, Her Excellency Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, has met with the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Jubilee House in Accra.
The meeting, which took place on Monday, June 2, 2025, was part of a three-day national summit on sustainable mining. It was also an opportunity for the Asante King to show his support for the government’s efforts in reviving Ghana’s economy.
During the visit, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II used the opportunity to call on all Ghanaians, especially political leaders and public servants, to support President John Dramani Mahama’s vision of resetting Ghana. He emphasized the need for unity, hard work, and honesty in the fight against illegal mining and other challenges facing the country.
The Asantehene pointed out that illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, continues to destroy water bodies, lands, and forests. He said corruption, weak regulations, and bad political decisions have made it difficult to stop the menace. According to him, Ghanaians must be bold to admit the truth and work together to find lasting solutions.
Otumfuo also spoke about the importance of adding value to Ghana’s natural resources before exporting them. He said the country must stop selling raw materials and rather invest in industries that will process gold, bauxite, iron, and lithium. This, he said, would create more jobs for the youth and reduce poverty.
In response, Vice President Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang thanked the King for his wise words and visit. She assured him that the government of President Mahama is ready to work closely with traditional leaders to promote national development. She said the government is focused on responsible and sustainable mining, adding that new policies will soon be introduced to formalize small-scale mining and protect the environment.
The meeting ended in a friendly atmosphere, with both leaders agreeing that development can only be achieved when government and traditional authorities work together for the common good of the people.
