Vincent Ekow Assafuah, Member of Parliament (MP) for Old Tafo, has taken to Facebook to accuse a fellow MP of encouraging illegal mining, also known as galamsey.
In his post in the late hours of Tuesday, 3rd June, 2025, Mr. Assafuah wrote, “When leaders become the problem instead of the solution!” He then named Hon. Pious Kwame Nkuah, MP for Sefwi Akontombra, and said the MP was caught on video not stopping illegal mining but rather helping people to do it.
He stated, “This is the same galamsey destroying our rivers and farms, yet he’s guiding them on where to dig. This is shameful. This is unacceptable.”
The Old Tafo MP also asked people to watch the video for themselves, claiming the evidence speaks clearly.
However, a closer look at the video tells a different story. In the video, Hon. Pious Kwame Nkuah is not seen encouraging the illegal miners. Instead, he is seen advising them. He speaks to them calmly and suggests that if they want to do mining, they must find better ways to do it without destroying water bodies and farmlands.
He talks about protecting the environment and encourages the miners to be responsible. There is no sign in the video of him guiding or showing them where to mine illegally.
The post by Mr. Assafuah has started discussions on social media, with some people agreeing with him and others asking for fairness in how such issues are handled.
Illegal mining, or galamsey, continues to be a big problem in Ghana. It damages rivers, farms, and forests and affects the health of many communities. Government officials, especially Members of Parliament, are expected to lead the fight against it.
