Samuel Koku Anyidoho, a former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed his happiness after President John Dramani Mahama publicly acknowledged the late President John Evans Atta Mills.
Mr. Anyidoho made a short but emotional post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, 3rd June, 2025, after Mahama revealed how the late President Mills wanted him (Mahama) to be his running mate ahead of the 2008 elections. According to Mahama, even though he had initially rejected the offer several times, it was a call from the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, that finally convinced him to accept the position.
Reacting to the story, Mr. Anyidoho wrote, “God bless President Mills. This is all I have been looking for. President Mahama, once these acknowledgments are done, it helps. Thank you.”
Mr. Anyidoho has always been seen as a strong supporter and loyal aide of the late President Mills. He worked closely with him during his presidency and has continued to speak about protecting Mills’ legacy, even after his passing in 2012.
Many people believe that the relationship between Anyidoho and Mahama has not been smooth in recent years, especially when it comes to how Mills’ legacy has been handled. For this reason, Anyidoho’s positive reaction to Mahama’s speech has surprised some Ghanaians.
In the speech, President Mahama praised the Asantehene for playing a key role in making him change his mind. Mahama said he was planning to retire from politics when President Mills first approached him to be his vice, but Otumfuo’s encouragement made him accept the position—even though he only agreed to do it for one term. That decision eventually made him President after Mills passed away in 2012.
Mr. Anyidoho’s message suggests that giving credit to Mills was very important to him, and he feels satisfied that Mahama has finally done so publicly.
