Some insects thought to be black flies have infested some towns in the Greater Accra Region’s North Dawhenya Electoral Area.
The flies have left blood stains at the bite sites on the human body, causing residents to be concerned.
Some of the affected residents claim they have been scratching their skin constantly, causing swollen areas on their bodies.
Abbeykope, Miotso, Eagle Nest Estates, and Mackweon Estates are among the areas affected.
Moses Nii-P Kutor, Assembly member for North Dawhenya Electoral Area, told reporters on Monday [July 24, 2023] that he had alerted the District Health Directorate and the Environmental Health Office to come to the community’s help.
The stings of the flies we are told are poisonous and leave sores and other skin diseases on their victims,” he said.
He called for an urgent attention to the situation so that the residents can go back to their normal activities.
“The situation is getting worse by the day and my worry is about the children, especially those in school who keep complaining about the invasion and the painful bites,” he said.
Meanwhile, a source at the Ningo Prampram District Health Directorate acknowledged the presence of the insects in the neighborhood and noted that steps were underway to investigate the issues.
According to the source, they were collaborating with the District’s Environmental Health Office to develop strategies, including fumigation of affected communities.
