Isaac Buxton (Fimfim) has always had music in his heart as he entered the industry as a rapper, not a producer.
His cousin started with Music Production with the software, FL Studio (Fruity Loops) and because Fimfim was a rapper back then, he used to heavily rely on his cousin for all his Production needs. After some time he was looking for certain elements in the production that he wasn’t getting. He would describe what he wanted to his cousin but he couldn’t get the picture, let alone deliver what he wanted.
It got to a point where he realised that he had to take things into his own hands and so he asked his cousin to teach him a few things on the machine. When his cousin was asleep at night, he used to use the PC to work on a few things. “It would sound so good in the night but when I wake up in the morning to listen to it again, it was some trash but that didn’t discourage me”, he told Asiedua & Aicko in an interview on Shobiz TV morning show SUN UP.
He kept doing this for some time and switched it up a little. He started trying his hands producing for his friends who were rappers. He wasn’t so good but his friends kept supporting him and pushing him to do better.
One day he went to the current studio he works at now, Platinum Studios, but then run by different people, as an artist to go and record but when he got there, the owner found out that he had a beat bank and so he allowed him to learn a few things from him. The other sound engineers working at the studio didn’t have any even though it is necessary because you need to play some of the beats for clients so they choose which one they want to go with.
When the owner went through his beat bank, he found some of the beats that were pretty good and decided to retain him as a sound engineer even though he went in there as an artist.
For a while, he was working as an in-house assistant producer at the studio but as fate could have it, the rent for the place was due and the owners couldn’t pay but he was so attached to the place and didn’t want to lose it so he spoke to a couple of people and asked them to help him acquire the place for himself.
When he finally got it, he immersed himself in Producing and started doing magic. He even stopped rapping and focused solely on production.
“The production that shot me into the limelight was Tulenkey’s Proud Fuck Boys even though prior to that I had done a lot of productions for other artistes like MzBel, Double and Afro Moses but I think they didn’t push those songs”, he told us in an interview.
Currently, he has worked with Tulenkey, Kofi Mole, Kofi Kinaata, Guru, Kwaw Kese, MzBel, Afro Moses, Gariba and Dobble among others. His work isn’t limited to Ghanaians as he has also worked with Togolese and Liberian musicians.
Apart from Producing, he teaches Sound Engineering at Doxa Open University in Dansoman.
