Manchester United have announced that Bruno Fernandes has been named captain in place of Harry Maguire.
England defender Maguire stated on Sunday that boss Erik ten Hag informed him that he will no longer be wearing the armband following a season in which he struggled for playing time.
During the previous season, Fernandes often captained the squad, appearing in all but one of the side’s Premier League fixtures as they finished third and qualified for the Champions League for the first time since 2021.
Since joining from Sporting Lisbon in 2020, the 28-year-old has made 185 appearances for the club.
Raphael Varane was appointed captain for United’s first preseason friendly against Lyon on Wednesday at Murrayfield, with Fernandes absent due to international duties in June.
Ten Hag’s squad arrived in the United States on Thursday for a 12-day tour, although he will be missing midfielder Fred, who has stayed in England for personal reasons.
