John Dumelo, an actor-turned-politician, has reacted to the adoption of the Narcotics Control Commission Bill, 2023 into law.
This will culminate in the legalization of cannabis cultivation for therapeutic and industrial purposes.
In a tweet, Mr. Dumelo described the judgment as a watershed moment in Ghana’s history.
He stated that as a farmer, he is thrilled to add cannabis production to his other farming ventures, which include ginger, tubers, grains, and chicken farming.
“I’m very excited Parliament has passed the Narcotics Control Commission Amendment Bill 2023, which seeks to decriminalize the cultivation of cannabis for medicinal and industrial purposes. This is a defining moment in Ghana’s history,” Mr Dumelo wrote.
He added “as a farmer, adding the cultivation of cannabis to my portfolio for medicinal industrial purposes is definitely something I’m looking forward to. God bless Ghana.”
This comes after Parliament enacted the Narcotics Control Commission Bill, 2023, into law on Wednesday.
The legislation empowers the Interior Ministry to issue licenses for the production of cannabis with a utility content of no more than 0.3% on dry weight spaces for industrial or therapeutic reasons.
