Hundreds of Ghanaians have gathered at the Supreme Court premises in Accra today, May 5, 2025, to take part in the much-anticipated ‘Save the Judiciary’ demonstration.
The protest, led by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and supported by four other smaller political parties, is aimed at defending the independence of Ghana’s judiciary.
According to the organizers, the demonstration is a peaceful action to protest the recent suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkonoo by President John Dramani Mahama. They believe the President’s decision is a direct attack on the judiciary and a threat to the rule of law in Ghana.
The Minority Caucus in Parliament has fully thrown its support behind the protest. Speaking on behalf of the group, the Minority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, said the demonstration is not about political party differences but about protecting Ghana’s democracy. He explained that when democracy is under threat, citizens must rise to defend it, no matter their political background.
He stated, “This is not about partisanship. It is about principles. We must protect the rule of law and ensure that the judiciary remains independent and free from political interference.”
Many of the demonstrators who spoke to the media said they joined the protest because they want justice and fairness in the country. They carried placards with messages such as “Hands Off the Judiciary,” “Justice for All,” and “We Stand with the Chief Justice.”
Security at the Supreme Court area has been tightened, with a heavy presence of police officers to maintain order. So far, the protest has remained peaceful, with demonstrators marching and chanting through the streets.
The protest is expected to continue throughout the day, with leaders from the NPP and other political parties expected to address the crowd later.
