A well-known activist and lawyer, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has expressed his disappointment in President John Dramani Mahama for what he sees as a lack of action in the fight against corruption. He said that the streets are really not happy with the president and they will soon give up on him.
In a Facebook post on Monday, 5th May, 2025, Barker-Vormawor reminded the President of his promise to deal with corruption, which he made during his first State of the Nation Address.
President Mahama had described the current state of the country as a “crime scene,” suggesting that many wrongdoings took place under the previous government. However, Barker-Vormawor says he is yet to see any serious actions taken to punish those involved in corruption.
The activist, who was once arrested and jailed for protesting against bad governance, said he personally spent more time in jail last year than all former government officials and their criminal partners combined. He believes this is a clear sign that the government is not serious about holding corrupt people accountable.
He compared the current administration to past ones. According to him, the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC), a military government in Ghana’s history, took stronger action against corruption in a much shorter time. He also pointed out that former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo jailed more protesters than the number of corrupt officials President Mahama has arrested since taking office.
In a strong message to the President, Barker-Vormawor said, “We need to see action.” He warned that if nothing changes, the people on the streets will lose trust in the government. He ended his post with a friendly “Shalom,” which means peace.
Many Ghanaians are now watching to see if President Mahama and his ORAL (Operation Recover All Loot) team will act swiftly and strongly against corruption, as the people expect real results.
