A video of the Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has gone viral after he was seen hitting a police officer during the SaveTheJudiciary demonstration held on Monday, May 5, 2025.
The protest, led by the minority in Parliament and supported by civil societies and other political parties, was aimed at defending the independence of the judiciary. Many protestors marched to the Supreme Court to express their concerns about political interference in the justice system.
Things got tense when the protestors arrived at an area. Some of them tried to enter a restricted zone which had been blocked by police officers. The officers formed a line to prevent anyone from crossing.
In the middle of the confusion, a video captured Alexander Afenyo-Markin in the crowd, pushing forward with the other protestors. As one of the police officers tried to stop the crowd, Afenyo-Markin was seen using his hand to hit the officer.
The video has quickly gone viral on social media, with many Ghanaians sharing mixed reactions. Some believe the action was wrong and should be condemned, especially because it came from a high-ranking member of Parliament. Others argue that the police were also too forceful with the protestors and the incident happened in the heat of the moment.
So far, there has been no official statement from Afenyo-Markin or the Ghana Police Service about the incident. It is unclear whether any legal action will be taken.
This is not the first time tensions have risen between lawmakers and the police during demonstrations, but many Ghanaians are shocked that a leader of Afenyo-Markin’s status would physically hit a police officer in public.
